It is actually a typical dessert from the Austro-Hungarian cuisine, and as my familly and the area I was born have the roots mixed in their history , it was kept as part of our tradition and passed from generation to generation.
It is not a complicated recipe, but as it was my first time preparing it, I can assure that it came exactly as it should have, as my mother used to prepare it : slightly salty, slightly sweet and slightly sour at the same time.
5-6 red potatoes
8 tbs wheat flower
a pinch of salt
1 sachet of vanilla sugar
1 tbs powder sugar
We boil the potatoes in their skin. When they are ready ,we take the skin off, mash them roughly ,add the egg and the flower and knead until the dough is done.
The plums should be washed and the pit removed.
We prepare the breadcrumbs in another pan where the butter was already melted, and stir for 5 minutes ,after which we add the sachet of vanilla sugar and 1 tbs of cinnamon.
For preparing the proper dumplings, well, we take aprox 1 tbs of dough, flatten it within the hands, add half of plum in the middle of it and then rotate until we get a round donut shape.
Meanwhile we put a large pot with watter to boil, and when it starts boiling we put the dumplings in it.When they rise to the water surface,we let them simmer for 10 more minutes on low heat.
When they are done boiling,we take them out, get them roughly trough the prepared breadcrumb, and....well...you have your first Plum Dumplings :)
This tasty and relatively easy to make recipe can be consumed both hot or cold, and also as an appetized or as a dessert, with a little powdered sugar sprinkled over it.
